Locked Out of Your Car? Here's What to Do (And What NOT to Do)

Stay Calm and Assess the Situation

It happens to the best of us. You are rushing to a meeting, grabbing groceries, or heading home after a long shift and suddenly you realize your keys are sitting on the driver seat, and the doors are locked. Before you panic, take a breath.

Check All Doors and the Trunk

Before calling anyone, do a quick walk around your vehicle. Check every door handle and the trunk or hatch. It is surprisingly common for one door to be unlocked when you assume they are all secured, especially on older vehicles without automatic locking systems.

What NOT to Do

The biggest mistake people make is trying to break into their own car. Using coat hangers, screwdrivers, slim jims, or other improvised tools can cause serious damage — bent door frames, scratched paint, broken window mechanisms, and damaged weather stripping. Modern vehicles are designed to resist these methods.

Another common mistake: breaking a window. Unless you are in a genuine emergency (child or pet locked inside in extreme heat), smashing a window is expensive, dangerous, and completely unnecessary when professional help is a phone call away.

Call a Professional Locksmith

A trained locksmith uses purpose-built, non-destructive tools designed for modern vehicles. The process typically takes 5-15 minutes, causes zero damage, and costs a fraction of what you would spend replacing a window or repairing a bent door frame.

At Red Obsidian Security, our technicians carry tools for virtually every make and model on the road. We respond quickly because we understand that being locked out at 11pm in a parking lot feels very different than reading about it online.

Prevention Tips

Consider keeping a spare key in your wallet or with a trusted friend. Some newer vehicles offer smartphone-based unlocking through manufacturer apps. And if you are prone to lockouts, a magnetic key box hidden on the vehicle frame can be a lifesaver — just make sure it is well-concealed.
